AI-native code editor built in Rust. 1.0 GA April 29-30, 2026; now on an active 1.x stable cadence (1.3.5, 1.4.3 by late May) shipping agent skills, a user-wide global AGENTS.md, terminal threads, and a Git branch-history view. Creator of the Agent Client Protocol (ACP); registry live with JetBrains built-in support, Gemini CLI (Google), Claude Code (beta), Codex, OpenCode.

Parallel subagents via spawn_agent (depth-1) + subagent_model, headless CI/CD mode, BYOK 1M context. Zed for Business ($30/seat/month) ships org-wide model policies, RBAC, spend controls — SSO/SAML/SCIM/SOC 2 confirmed verbatim 'not currently available, but we're working on them now.' GPU-accelerated 120fps rendering, 2x faster startup vs VS Code, real-time CRDT multiplayer. '2nd most popular AI IDE by usage'; 9% of Rust developers (up from 1% YoY); Anthropic/Linear/Ramp/Shopify customers.

Limited by no codebase indexing/semantic search (deliberate design; current-file + open-buffers + @-mention + regex only) — caps Context at 11. Compliance certifications absent; enterprise reviews blocked until SAML+SOC 2 land.

Agent-panel papercuts persist post-1.0 (#50269 freeze, #52770 Zeta 2, #39997 AI-change loss).

Assessment

Status rationale

Assessed (rating 61). 1.0 GA + active 1.x cadence + Zed for Business governance controls + ACP protocol leadership (registry live, Gemini CLI / Claude Code / Codex) are genuine differentiators. Compliance (9) remains below threshold for broader enterprise adoption — Zed explicitly states SSO/SAML/SCIM/SOC 2 not yet available.

Context capped at 11 (no-codebase-indexing): Zed ships no semantic codebase index by design, a clear gap vs Cursor. Business plan roadmap is credible but undelivered compliance certification is a hard blocker for regulated enterprises.

Agent-panel papercuts persist post-1.0. Holds at Assessed until SAML + SOC 2 land or a named production-validated enterprise reference emerges.

Opus 4.8 re-baseline net rating 63->61 from the Context cap correction (capability unchanged).

Watch for

Movement triggers

Upgrade if: codebase indexing / semantic search or RAG shipped (lifts no-codebase-indexing cap, context to 13+), SOC 2 certified (compliance to 12+), SAML/SCIM delivered (compliance to 11+), agent-panel issues #50269/#52770/#39997 closed with 90-day stability validation (autonomy to 14), recursive subagent delegation (autonomy to 14), named enterprise customer with public production reference + SOC 2 (consider Validated). Downgrade if: new unpatched CVEs, SAML/SOC 2 roadmap abandoned, agent reliability regressions confirmed over 30+ day window, Anthropic or other anchor customer publicly migrates away, Business plan retracted.
